“I must say this: If you, the men of Ashanti will not go forward, I shall call upon my fellow women.” Ghanaian, Queen Yaa Asantewa (c. 1840–1921) fearlessly led an army of women in a major war against the British colonists. Yaa Asantewaa’s War, was one of the last major wars on the continent of Africa to be led by a woman. The Europeans refer to the women soldiers as “Amazons”. This collage represents these women’s spirit of unity and sovereignty. They persisted. They were the Women of Courage, Tenacity, and Strength; they were their Wo Men of Valor.
